Research
Primary Research
-
Conduct user interviews to collect qualitative data on studying habits and useful tools for studying.
-
Five interviews, 10-15 minutes.
Research questions
-
What are some of the challenges that people face when trying to study for classes and what tools could make this process easier?
-
How are people currently finding a study partner and how could this process be improved?
Interview outcomes
The team decided to interview students who are currently experiencing online class due the pandemic. Below are the data collected from students during the interview process.
"I like to study where everyone else is studying. They do all of their things and I’m doing my own thing as well."
"I'll get to the point where I think I understand it, but then like, it helps me to understand it better if somebody else explains it a different way."
"I feel like studying with other people is a good way to check for gaps in the knowledge. And solidify what you already know."
"It's been really hard for me studing from home. What makes it harder is: I can't really reach out to my classmates to work on projects"
"Since the pandemic hits the road, I can't focus too much myself. I love studying with people it helps me engaging more in the work."
User-focused
-
inspiration/motivation/hypothesis: Students had less time to socialize while studying remotely and it's hard to make bonds and find people to study with.
Secondary Research
College students have worked remotely for over a year now. 2020 was a different year for all people around the world. Has this affected the way students reach out to other students to form study groups? What are some of the challenges students are dealing with while studying remotely and not have the opportunity to meet 1:1 in person?
Pains points
-
Lack of in-person interaction
-
Adapting to unfamiliar technology
Motivators
-
Create an interaction platform that would allow colleges peers to connect and help each other.
-
Staying motivated
-
Distractions and time management.
-
lack of communication with classmates
Analysis
Data survey

We discovered that 43.75% of the students surveyed find it very helpful to study with someone else and 56.25% will be willing to study with someone they don’t know.
Interview findings
Not connecting very often with other students outside of class
enjoy studying with others to focus more. They don’t do it as often as they used to.
not studying in groups anymore because they don’t know people in their classes
Struggling with the new online education changes
User persona

Ashton is a STEM student at University of Oregon with the goal of going to either med school or nursing school after their undergrad.
She is really hard-working and want to achieve in school, despite the challenges of the pandemic.
While she prefer initially studying on her own, working with classmates helps her review material and become more confident in their knowledge before tests.

Problem statement
We discovered that college students value studying with another person. Last year due to the pandemic schooling switched to a virtual approach, which caused students to struggle to adjust to the new practices and reach out to peers.
How might we help college students who need to succeed in their careers, connect with other students to study together and achieve their career goals?
Ideation
The goal
Uncover some of the challenges students deal with when they are trying to find a partner to study or a person that is a subject matter expert on a particular topic.
